Don earned a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University and a Master's degree from the University of Illinois, where his thesis examined manufactured housing. He designed his first manufactured-home community in 1964 and opened his own practice five years later.
Across a five-decade career, Don built a reputation for practical, holistic community planning throughout the United States. His work helped elevate site planning within manufactured-housing communities and outdoor-hospitality resorts.
Nadi acquired the Westphal practice in December 2019, bringing its archive, sector knowledge and North American community-planning legacy into the group. Don continues to inform the practice as Principal Emeritus.
